Last reviewed on April 27, 2026
Ajax is named for the Royal Navy ship HMS Ajax, and many of its older streets are named for the ship's crew. The community grew from a wartime munitions plant and has since become a diverse Toronto-area suburb. The Ajax waterfront features a long lakeside trail and beaches.
Ajax is bordered by Pickering to the west and Whitby to the east, with Highway 401 cutting across the town and the Lake Ontario shoreline forming the southern edge. The Ajax GO station provides commuter rail to Toronto.
Notable neighbourhoods include the historic core around Harwood and Bayly, the waterfront, Pickering Village (a heritage area), the Audley Road growth corridor, and the area around the Ajax Community Centre.
Ajax is part of Greater Toronto Area / Durham Region, with a population of approximately 130,000. For broader context, see the Southern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
