Map of Cambridge, a city in Waterloo Region formed by the 1973 amalgamation of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler at the confluence of the Grand and Speed rivers.
Last reviewed on April 27, 2026
Cambridge has a striking 19th-century stone downtown core in Galt and is home to a campus of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The Grand River runs directly through the heart of the city.
Highway 401 cuts across the north end of Cambridge, and Highway 8 runs through to Kitchener. The Grand River Conservation Authority maintains parks along the river corridor.
The three former towns — Galt, Preston, and Hespeler — still function as distinct downtowns. Other neighbourhoods include East Galt, West Galt, Blair, and Riverside.
Cambridge is part of Waterloo Region, with a population of approximately 140,000. For broader context, see the Southern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
