Kingston was the first capital of the Province of Canada (1841–1844) and is the seat of Queen's University and the Royal Military College of Canada. Its 19th-century limestone buildings give the city its nickname. The Kingston waterfront is a popular tourism destination and a gateway to the Thousand Islands.
Highway 401 runs north of the city. Kingston is the southern terminus of the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that links north to Ottawa. Wolfe Island, the largest of the Thousand Islands, is reached by ferry from downtown.
The downtown core, Sydenham Ward, the Princess Street commercial spine, the Williamsville district, the Kingston Penitentiary precinct, and the historic Stuart Street area near Queen's University are the city’s most visited neighbourhoods.
Kingston is part of Eastern Ontario, with a population of approximately 135,000. For broader context, see the Eastern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
