London is a regional centre for healthcare, education, insurance, and manufacturing. The city is home to Western University, Fanshawe College, and several major teaching hospitals. Often called the "Forest City" for its tree canopy, London has an extensive parks system that follows the Thames River through downtown.
Highway 401 runs along the south edge of the city and Highway 402 heads west toward Sarnia. The London International Airport serves regional traffic. The downtown core includes Dundas Place and the Covent Garden Market, and the city's bus system is operated by London Transit.
Notable areas include Old North, Old South, Wortley Village, Byron, Westmount, Masonville near the major regional shopping centre, and the East London neighbourhoods around Argyle and Hamilton Road.
London is part of Southwestern Ontario, with a population of approximately 420,000. For broader context, see the Western Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
