Last reviewed on April 27, 2026
Markham hosts a high concentration of information technology, life sciences, and corporate offices, and it is one of Canada's most diverse cities by background. Historic districts coexist with newer planned communities such as Cathedraltown and Cornell.
The city is bordered by Toronto on the south, Vaughan on the west, Richmond Hill on the northwest, and the rural Whitchurch-Stouffville on the north. Highway 407 crosses the city, and the GO Transit Stouffville line and several VIVA bus rapid transit corridors serve the area.
Markham retains historic village cores at Unionville, Thornhill, and Markham Village, all with preserved 19th-century main streets. Newer developments cluster around Highway 7 / Warden, Cathedraltown, Cornell, and Berczy Village.
Markham is part of Greater Toronto Area / York Region, with a population of approximately 350,000. For broader context, see the Southern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
