North Bay is a service centre for Northeastern Ontario, home to Nipissing University and Canadore College, and the headquarters of Ontario Northland. Lake Nipissing and the connecting French River make North Bay a fishing and tourism hub.
The Trans-Canada Highway splits at North Bay: Highway 17 heading east to Ottawa, and Highway 11 heading northwest toward Cochrane and beyond.
Downtown North Bay along Main Street and Lakeshore Drive, the Birchaven area, West Ferris, Pinewood, and the eastern Trout Lake area make up the city's main districts.
