Orillia is a regional service centre and tourist town, the home of author Stephen Leacock and the inspiration for his fictional Mariposa. The Trent–Severn Waterway passes through the city via the Atherley Narrows.
Highway 11 runs along the city's western edge as the main route between Toronto and the north. Highway 12 connects east to the Trent–Severn corridor.
