Pembroke is the largest community in Renfrew County and the southern entry to Algonquin Park's eastern access points. The Algonquin College Pembroke campus is based here. The Champlain Trail Museum highlights the city's logging heritage.
Highway 17 (the Trans-Canada) bypasses Pembroke just to the south. The Ottawa River forms the border with Quebec.
