About Peterborough
Peterborough is a vibrant city in Central Ontario with a population of approximately 83,000 residents, known as the gateway to the Kawarthas cottage country. Located on the Otonabee River, Peterborough serves as a regional center for commerce, education, healthcare, and culture in the Kawartha Lakes region. The city offers a blend of urban amenities and access to beautiful lakes and waterways.
The city is home to Trent University and Fleming College, giving Peterborough a vibrant student population and cultural scene. Major attractions include the Peterborough Lift Lock, the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world and a National Historic Site, which raises boats 65 feet as part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. The city's downtown features historic architecture, shops, restaurants, galleries, and the Market Hall. Peterborough's economy is diverse, including manufacturing, education, healthcare, technology, and tourism.
Highway 115 connects Peterborough to Highway 401 and the Greater Toronto Area (approximately 125 km southwest). Highway 7 runs east-west through the city, connecting to Ottawa and areas west. County roads provide access to surrounding Kawartha Lakes communities. The Otonabee River flows through the center of the city, part of the Trent-Severn Waterway system connecting Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. George Street serves as the main downtown corridor, while Lansdowne Street and Chemong Road are major commercial routes. The city's location provides excellent access to numerous lakes and waterways for boating and fishing.
