Peterborough is home to Trent University and Fleming College and is best known for the Peterborough Lift Lock, the highest hydraulic boat lift in the world. The Liftlock connects upper and lower sections of the Trent–Severn Waterway right within the city.
Highway 115/35 connects Peterborough south to the GTA. Highway 7 runs east toward Ottawa and west toward Kitchener.
Downtown Peterborough around George Street, the East City across the Otonabee, the Trent University area, the West End, and the Lakefield-area outskirts are the city’s main districts.
