The city's downtown is centred near the Pickering Town Centre and the Pickering GO station, and a large undeveloped Federal Lands area at the north end is the proposed site of the Pickering Airport.
Highway 401 cuts through the southern part of the city, and Highway 407 crosses the north. The Lakeshore East GO line stops at Pickering.
Bay Ridges and Frenchman's Bay along the lake, the City Centre area, the historic village of Whitevale, Brougham, and Claremont in the rural north, and the Liverpool Road waterfront are notable parts.
Pickering is part of Greater Toronto Area / Durham Region, with a population of approximately 100,000. For broader context, see the Southern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
