Last reviewed on April 27, 2026
St. Thomas was once one of the busiest rail junctions in North America. It is also remembered as the site where the famous circus elephant Jumbo was killed in 1885; a statue at the western entrance to the city commemorates the event. The Elgin County Railway Museum preserves the city's rail heritage.
Highway 3 (the Talbot Trail) runs through the city. Highway 4 connects north to London.
Downtown St. Thomas around Talbot Street, Pinafore Park, the area near Pinafore Lake, and the eastern industrial district near the former rail yards are central to the city.
St. Thomas is part of Southwestern Ontario / Elgin County, with a population of approximately 42,000. For broader context, see the Western Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
