About Sudbury

Sudbury sits in a unique geological feature called the Sudbury Basin, formed by an ancient meteorite impact and now one of the world's largest sources of nickel and copper. Major attractions include Science North on Ramsey Lake, the Big Nickel monument, and Dynamic Earth. Laurentian University and Cambrian College serve the region.

Geography & Major Routes

The city is anchored by Highway 17 (the Trans-Canada) east-west and Highway 69/400 south to the GTA. It contains many lakes within municipal boundaries due to its very large amalgamated area.

Sudbury Districts & Communities

Greater Sudbury includes the urban core (Downtown, the Donovan, New Sudbury), and the historic communities of Copper Cliff, Lively, Walden, Garson, Capreol, Coniston, Wahnapitae, Onaping Falls, and Rayside-Balfour.

Region

Sudbury is part of Northern Ontario, with a population of approximately 165,000. For broader context, see the Northern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
