Timmins covers a very large area due to its 1973 amalgamation, including the historic mining communities of Schumacher, South Porcupine, and Porcupine. The city is also the birthplace of singer Shania Twain, with a centre dedicated to her in town.
Highway 101 runs through the city as the main east-west route, connecting to Highway 11 to the north.
Downtown Timmins around Third Avenue and Pine Street, Schumacher, South Porcupine, the original Porcupine townsite, and the rural surrounding area make up the city.
Timmins is part of Cochrane District / Northern Ontario, with a population of approximately 41,000. For broader context, see the Northern Ontario regional map and the Ontario map with cities.
