Waterloo is home to the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. The city forms the northern half of the urban core that includes Kitchener, with the ION light rail running north through Uptown Waterloo to the universities.
The city is roughly bounded by Kitchener on the south, the rural Woolwich Township on the north, Wilmot to the west, and Waterloo's older neighbourhoods near Westmount Road. Conestoga Mall is a major retail anchor at the north end.
Uptown Waterloo around King Street is the city’s main commercial district. Other notable areas include the University District, Westmount, Lakeshore, Beechwood, Eastbridge, and the rural-urban edge along the boundary with Woolwich.
