Complete map of Highway 417 - the Queensway - through Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. Ottawa's main expressway connecting Highway 416 to Highway 401.
Highway 417, locally known as "the Queensway" through Ottawa, is Eastern Ontario's primary expressway and a vital component of the Trans-Canada Highway system. Running approximately 190 kilometers from Arnprior through Ottawa to the Quebec border, it serves as Ottawa's main east-west corridor and connects the national capital to Highway 401 via Highway 416. Through Ottawa, the Queensway handles over 180,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the busiest sections of highway in Eastern Ontario and essential for commuters, government employees, and commercial traffic.
The highway was constructed in segments between 1960 and 1997, with the Ottawa section completed first to serve the growing capital city. The Queensway section through central Ottawa features 6-8 lanes and includes major junctions with Highway 416 (connecting to Highway 401), Highway 7, and the Airport Parkway. The western section extends through Kanata and continues to Arnprior and the Ottawa Valley. The eastern section passes through Orleans and Rockland before reaching the Quebec border where it becomes Autoroute 40 toward Montreal.
The western section (Arnprior to Kanata) serves the Ottawa Valley and western suburbs, connecting to Highway 17 and serving communities like Renfrew. The Kanata section passes through Ottawa's technology hub with exits for major tech employers and suburban neighborhoods. The central Queensway through Ottawa features critical junctions including the Highway 416 interchange (connecting to Toronto via Highway 401), the Airport Parkway (serving Ottawa International Airport), and numerous downtown exits for government districts and Parliament Hill. The eastern section through Orleans, Rockland, and Hawkesbury connects to the Quebec border and continues as Quebec's Autoroute 40 toward Montreal, forming part of the Trans-Canada Highway corridor between Toronto and Montreal.
